Healthcare

Clinics that cannot close.

Welded safety vinyl, coved skirting and patient-friendly LVT for clinics, wards and practices, phased around the people using them.

What healthcare work demands.

Infection control signs off the floor

The floor has to stand up to daily cleaning and disinfection without dulling, lifting or staining.

Clinical rooms are released one at a time

Each room has to be fitted and back in use inside the window the estates team can give it.

Audits inspect every junction and weld

Nothing can be left open: seams, coving and door thresholds all have to be neat, continuous and sealed.

From treatment room to ward.

At Abbey House Dental in Stoke-on-Trent, working for Artico, we fitted herringbone-effect sheet vinyl coved up the walls in the surgeries and clinical rooms, herringbone LVT through reception and the patient lounge, and carpet tiles across the first floor.

For Briar Construction we worked on the floors of three new builds for Montpelier Estates. At Cefn Carnau Hospital in South Wales, a new 27-bed low secure hospital built in its grounds, we lined the 27 en-suites in vinyl from floor to ceiling and laid Polyflor Wood FX in three enhanced care bedrooms. At Emerald Place Clinic, a 12-bed CAMHS unit in Surrey, Polyflor Wood FX safety vinyl runs through the bedrooms, lounges and corridors, and the en-suites have Polysafe Quattro wet-room flooring coved at the walls with vinyl-lined walls. At The Avalon Centre in Swindon, where Briar built a new 12-bed rehabilitation unit, five bungalows and a café, we laid Polyflor Forest FX wood-effect vinyl in the bedrooms and lounges and coved safety vinyl in the wet rooms and the clinic.

For Priory Healthcare we fitted safety vinyl with welded seams and coved skirting for a ward refurbishment. In NHS clinics we have fitted the same welded vinyl and coving in clinical treatment rooms.

For specifiers

What the specification needs to cover.

The points a healthcare flooring specification normally addresses, room by room.

Welded seams
Sheet vinyl in clinical areas is heat-welded at every seam, giving one continuous, impervious surface with no open joints to hold dirt or fluids.
Coved skirting with sealed junctions
The floor is carried up the wall as a sit-on or flush coved skirting, so there is no right-angled corner to clean and the floor-to-wall junction is sealed.
HBN 00-10 Part A
Health Building Note 00-10 Part A covers flooring in healthcare buildings and is the usual reference point for an NHS flooring specification.
Slip resistance in wet rooms
En-suites, sluices and wet rooms need a slip-resistant safety floor chosen for how the room is used, including barefoot use where that applies.
Cleaning and chemical resistance
The finish has to tolerate the trust or practice cleaning and disinfection products. Manufacturers publish resistance data to check against.

General guidance to raise at specification stage, not a substitute for it. Always check the current documents and the manufacturer's test data for the product chosen.
