What the specification needs to cover.
The points a school flooring specification normally addresses.
- Durability for heavy traffic
- Corridors, entrances and halls take heavy, concentrated wear. The commercial use class and wear layer, plus entrance matting at external doors, decide how long a floor lasts.
- Slip resistance in wet areas
- Toilets, changing rooms, kitchens and science rooms need slip-resistant safety flooring, judged on its wet pendulum test value (PTV).
- Acoustics and BB93
- Building Bulletin 93 sets the acoustic performance standards for schools. Floor finishes affect impact sound and reverberation, which is one reason carpet suits libraries and quiet rooms.
- Sports and multi-use halls
- Indoor sports floors are normally specified to BS EN 14904, which covers how a surface performs for multi-sports use.
